October 28th, 1999 - At the request of Chaplain (Colonel) Raymond Hart, Sr., USAF, The Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences hosted 25 military Chaplains for their joint quarterly Inter-Service Chaplain Training Program. The program consisted of a tour of the School, as well as a presentation by Chaplain (Captain) Abdul Rasheed Muhammad on "The Islamic Chaplain: Misperceptions and Realities," panel presentation and discussion of the School's military Chaplains program, and an informal luncheon. The Chaplains came from all faiths and represented all branches of the military service in the greater Washington DC area.
Chaplain (Captain) Abdul Rasheed Muhammad became the first Islamic Chaplain in the U.S. Armed Forces in 1993. He spoke about tasks of a Muslim military Chaplain, such as acquisition of special rations and establishing a mosque on a base; clarified the common misperceptions; explained the distinctions between Islam and the Nation of Islam; and outlined various issues that affect Muslim men and women in the U.S. military.
Dr. Taha Jabir Alalwani, the President of GSISS, Foster Diebold, Executive Dean and Ahmed Alwani, the Associate Dean & Registrar, presented the GSISS Chaplaincy Program to this group of military chaplains. Chaplain Muhammad offered free copies of the book Religion of Islam and The Nation of Islam: What is the Difference? By Mustafa El-Amin to visiting chaplains to better understand the Islamic faith. Many favorable comments on the success of this program were heard from those who attended.
